drug addiction scholarships

Is it ok to mention drug addictions on a scholarship essay?

what are the benefits?……. disadvantages?

Im filling out an application and I came to this question “What are some factors or challenges that have shaped who you are?”….my brother had a drug addiction and in dealing with that through my high school years has shaped me into the person i am….

I don’t know if that would be something that i would want to put in though….

Help I need advice!!!!!

Life lessons learned from sharing the struggles of family members are always a good topic for scholarship essays – especially for this type of prompt.

Don’t play it up for sympathy, but if your experiences really helped shape the person you are today – then that’s absolutely what you should write about.

Focus on how it affected you, but more importantly, tie it to your dreams and aspirations for the future. Scholarship essay readers aren’t as interested in ‘where you’ve been” as “where you’re going”, and how the education provided (in part) by the scholarship will help get you there.

Good luck to you! I hope you get it!
